Regions

Four regions, one island

Mauritius divides easily into four: a cosmopolitan north, a dramatic west, a private east, and a south and centre that keep everything within reach. Start with the rhythm you want — the address follows.

Le Morne Brabant rising above the west coast lagoon at sunset

Where the mountains meet the lagoon.

West

The west is the island at its most dramatic — the shoulder of Le Morne rising straight from the lagoon, dark peaks standing over Tamarin and Black River, and sunsets that empty the coastal road. Life here is lived outdoors: dawn surf at Tamarin, kites strung across the bay, walks into the black rivers and long, unhurried afternoons on the sand. It has become the address for those who want space, nature and a horizon that stays open.

Key localities — Tamarin · Black River · Flic-en-Flac · Le Morne

A quiet east coast beach at Belle Mare with casuarinas and a clear lagoon

Preserved by nature, private by choice.

East

The east has been sheltered from overbuilding, and it shows: long empty beaches, fairways held back from the water, and estates where the loudest sound is the wind in the casuarinas. Roches Noires and Beau Champ hide some of the island’s most discreet addresses, while Belle Mare offers a line of sand that runs for kilometres. This is the coast for buyers who value privacy and quiet over proximity to the nightlife.

Fishing boats on the Blue Bay lagoon with the south coast mountains beyond

From the highlands to the lagoon — everything within reach.

South & Centre

South and centre are where the practical island and the real one meet. On the plateau — Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas, Moka and the towers of Ébène — international schools, clinics, the motorway and the business districts are minutes away, and Floréal adds its design workshops and weekend markets. Drop south and the pace changes: fishing boats along the Mahébourg waterfront, the shallow, protected lagoon of Blue Bay and Pointe d’Esny, and villages where the bakery still knows your name. The airport is close, there is more space for the money, and the wild south-east coast is at the end of the road.

Key localities — Moka · Floréal · Ébène · Curepipe
